The player controls series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu and recurring character Goro Majima, alternating between the two at predetermined points during the story. The game takes place from December 1988 to January 1989, in Kamurochō and Sotenbori, fictionalized recreations of Tokyo's Kabukichō and Osaka's Dōtonbori areas respectively. Yakuza 0 is an action-adventure game set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. Yakuza 0 was followed up by a remake of the original game, Yakuza Kiwami, the next chronological installment of the series. It has since come to be considered one of the greatest video games of all time.
The game received generally favourable reviews from critics, and is largely responsible for the franchise's rise in popularity and sales in the West, the series being deemed obscure beforehand.

After that we fight with one of the brightest representatives of the clan - "lieutenant" - and begin our criminal activities with Akira Tachibane. Kiryu beats a man in a back street, demanding the return of debts, and then the nameless is killed, leaving him to rot on "empty land." Because of such cases, Kiryu leaves the Yakuza knowing that the Tojo clan is preparing a major attack. The first scene shows the "quiet" war of the Japanese mafiosi. However, our heroes are loyal to their clan, despite the fact that Goro was exiled and Kazuma is the lowest rank. Empty land rightfully belongs to no one, so all groups in Japan come to seize this place at any cost. Events begin in 1988, when two Yakuza characters, Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, take part in a battle for a small industrial site in the center of Kamurocho. Role-playing game with a lot of dialogue, revealing a deep plot, Yakuza 0 claims to be a game that combines friendship, self-love, the search for a true vocation. The Yakuza is Japan's largest mafia group that rules everything that can be taken under control.
